Fork In The Road

Every young person faces a fork in the road, a moment when the path they choose determines who they become.

Film Overview

Every young person faces a fork in the road, a moment when the path they choose determines who they become. For roughly 3,000 Detroit-area youths per year over the past several decades, the Metro Detroit Youth Clubs (MDYC) has stood at that intersection, offering direction when it matters most.

In 1958, Jack and Patti Salter, founding directors of the then Royal Oak Boys Club, welcomed kids to the original site, a log cabin located on the same property where the Jack & Patti Salter Community Center now stands.

The documentary will explore how one organization’s humble beginnings has transformed lives through sports, mentorship, and community engagement. Through interviews with former members, now working as teachers, business owners and civic leaders, the film traces the clubs’ impact across generations. Coaches and volunteers share their commitment to providing structure and being positive role models in neighborhoods where options are limited.

Additionally, three youth members of the MDYC will be a part of the filmmaking process, selected through a creative storytelling competition within the MDYC.

The audience will witness from their perspective and talents, the significance of how the MDYC helps impact the lives of their peers.

Fork in the Road will be a story about intervention (at critical moments), adults who showed up and kids who found their way forward when the road ahead seemed uncertain.
